Pisa and the Square of Miracles Wednesday 4/29/26 Day 3
We remained docked in Livorno today and we took the included tour to Pisa. We had been to Pisa once before and climbed that famous leaning tower then, so this time we opted to see inside the baptistery and the cathedral instead. The baptistery was constructed beginning in 1152 and is the largest baptistery in Italy. It is most famous for being the baptismal site of Galileo Galilei, who apparently, also threw various objects from the top of the tower to test gravity. All of the buildings located in the Square of Miracles, including the baptistery, the cathedral, and the tower, are leaning. The baptistery leans 0.6 degrees, while the tower leans nearly 4 deg. The cathedral is just funky and leans all kinds of different ways. It is in a constant state of repair. None are in danger of falling down, or at least that’s what the guides will tell you so you’ll buy a ticket and climb up.

Seriously, the square is absolutely beautiful, with its stunning white marble and Romanesque architecture. The baptistery itself has exceptional acoustics, and one of the guides demonstrated it with her amazing operatic voice. The cathedral is just as beautiful, and is the final resting place of Pope Gregory VIII, among many others. During peak season, the Square of Miracles hosts 5 million visitors per year. Definitely do not miss this on a trip to this part of Italy.

Back on the ship, we had a fun evening having dinner at the Italian restaurant Manfredi’s, having drinks in the Explorer’s Lounge, and listening to music in Torshavn with some new friends we met on the first day.
