Welcome to Cape Town, South Africa September 14 Sunday

We started our last morning in Vic Falls with a lecture about David Livingstone given by a local school teacher who had lived in Zimbabwe  since she was two years old. I must admit, I did not do my research about Livingstone before coming to Africa, and assumed he was your average European who came here to claim land, start colonies, and exploit the local people who had been living here, quite happily, for thousands of years. I was quite wrong in these assumptions.  While he did want to convert the tribal people to Christianity, he was an extraordinary explorer, and a fierce abolitionist, who was nearly single handedly responsible for stopping the slave trade from the eastern part of Africa to the Middle East through the port in Mozambique. He was a remarkable man who is honored and revered in all of the southern part of the African continent. We learned a great deal about a remarkable man. This is one of the reasons we love to travel, and especially with OAT. They have a lot of cultural immersion activities you are able to take advantage of. Traveling broadens our knowledge base, opens our eyes, and immerses is into ideas and cultures we don’t experience in our small world at home. After the lecture, we were treated to a lovely performance with by a local Zimbabwe singing group.

Soon after the lecture, we boarded a bus to Victoria Falls International Airport for our three hour flight to Cape Town, South Africa, and said goodbye to our extraordinary Trip Experience Leader, Wonder. He was a remarkable young man who had been raised in the Tonga Tribe in a small village about an eight  hour drive from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. This was his third trip as a TEL with Overseas Adventure Travel. OAT depends heavily on reviews from their travelers when hiring TELs for future trips, as they are all independent contractors. He has worked very hard to make our trip smooth and memorable and we will be giving him rave reviews when we get home next week.

We were met at the Cape Town airport by Juan (pronounced Zhon with  a Dutch pronunciation), our TEL for the extension part of our trip. Juan was born and raised in Cape Town. OAT offers pre and post trip extensions, and 13 of our group of 15 travelers opted for the post trip extension to Cape Town. We checked into the Sun Square City Bowl Hotel in the central business district of Cape Town, and went for a brief walk around the city to orient us. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant, and a few of us had drinks at the hotel bar on the top floor with views of Table Mountain all lit up behind us. It was quite a long day with with the flight and the travel time, and we are looking forward to our day in Cape Town tomorrow.
